Kids in the Kitchen – Homemade Chicken Caesar Salad
Homeschool
Audio By Carbonatix
The kitchen is one of the most effective classrooms in a homeschool home. Over years of raising ten children, I’ve discovered that teaching kids to prepare simple, wholesome, homemade dishes creates practical life skills and wonderful moments of connection. While a crisp Caesar salad feels like a special treat, turning it into a family project makes it even sweeter.
When we invite our children into meal preparation, we teach them stewardship, service, and hospitality.
Homemade with Gratitude
In the Old Testament, God reminded His people to give thanks for the good things of the land. Deuteronomy 8:10 says, “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.”
Preparing a fresh, green salad allows us to pause and appreciate the wholesome ingredients God provides. From crisp Romaine to golden croutons, teaching children to build a meal from scratch helps them connect the food on their plates to the Creator who provides all good gifts.
Serving One Another in Love
Cooking together gives children an opportunity to serve their family with joy. Jesus taught us that true leadership comes through serving others. When a child tears the lettuce, whisks the dressing, or bakes croutons, they are contributing to the family table in a meaningful way.
Making an approachable homemade version of Caesar dressing—without raw eggs or anchovies—gives kids confidence in the kitchen while creating a crowd-pleasing dish everyone looks forward to sharing.

Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Make the Croutons: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Toss bread cubes with olive oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and salt in a large bowl. Spread evenly on a baking sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes until golden brown and crunchy. Set aside to cool.
- Cook the Chicken: Season chicken breasts with salt, pepper, and a splash of olive oil. Cook in a skillet over medium heat for 6–7 minutes per side until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Let the chicken rest for a few minutes, then slice into bite-sized strips.

- Toss the Salad: Place the chopped Romaine lettuce into a large serving bowl. Add the cooked chicken strips, homemade garlic croutons, and extra grated Parmesan cheese. Drizzle the dressing over the top and toss gently to coat.
- Serve & Enjoy: Divide into bowls and serve fresh at your family table!
Tips for Making Your Kitchen a Place of Connection
- Prioritize Presence: Put away screens during prep time to let conversation flow naturally.
- Embrace Imperfection: Let the lettuce pieces be uneven and the croutons rustic. Process matters more than perfection.
- Start with Gratitude: Pause before the meal to thank God for the food and the hands that prepared it.
A Prayer for Your Family Table
Lord, thank You for the bounty You provide and the joy of working together in the kitchen to make a delicious, homemade meal. Bless this food to nourish our bodies and these moments to strengthen our family bonds. May our home always be filled with Your peace and hospitality. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
