It’s the middle of summer. The temperature outside is soaring, the kids are home from school, and the thought of winter coats, hot cocoa, and wrapped packages feels a million miles away.

But what if the middle of July is actually the absolute perfect time to pause and check the temperature of our hearts?

We live in a world that feels incredibly loud, fractured, and heavy right now. Turn on the news or scroll through your social media feeds for just five minutes, and you’re bound to find a dozen things that cause genuine anxiety, sadness, and fear about the future. It is so easy to let the chaotic goings-on of the world steal our daily joy and crowd out our peace.

That’s why I want to invite you to celebrate a different kind of “Christmas in July” with me this week.

Let’s step away from the mid-summer rush, ignore the worldly noise for a few minutes, and intentionally capture that quiet, sacred Christmas spirit—the one that reminds us that no matter how dark the world gets, a Light has come that can never be extinguished.

Learning to Pause When the World is Spinning

In the actual winter season, our minds are usually racing with holiday logistics—school plays, shopping lists, and neighborhood parties. In the summer, it’s camp schedules, vacation planning, and household chores. The season changes, but the pace rarely does.

Before you let your mind race ahead to the next item on your summer to-do list, I urge you to take a moment to pause.

  • Pause and remember that Jesus doesn’t get caught up in the cultural hype or the global panic. He sits unshakeably on His throne.
  • Pause and pray for those who are walking through a heavy summer season of grief, facing life without someone they love, or wrestling with hidden heartaches.
  • Pause and capture the simple moments that matter most—the face-to-face ones giggling over melting popsicles or snuggling on the couch after a long, hot day.
  • Pause and choose thankfulness, intentionally shifting your eyes away from what you lack and focusing entirely on God’s abundant grace.

We often blame modern culture for stripping peace and joy out of our lives, but the truth is, we are the ones who choose our daily schedules, our priorities, and our mental focus. We are the ones who get to pick whether the Prince of Peace is invited into our ordinary summer afternoons or not.

As Psalm 46:10 beautifully reminds us: "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."

That promise doesn’t just apply in December; it is a lifeline for us right now in July.

3 Ways to Practice the Presence of Jesus This Summer

We don’t have to wait for the snow to fall to experience the profound, unshakeable comfort of our Savior. Here are three simple ways to bring the heart-happy peace of the nativity into your summer routine:

  • 1. Listen closely to the words of timeless hymns: Put on a playlist of classic worship songs or traditional Christmas hymns while you drive or fold laundry. Don’t just let them be background noise. Really ponder the lyrics—like “A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices”—and let those truths anchor your anxious mind.
  • 2. Read the Christmas story out of season: Open up Luke 2 with your kids or during your morning quiet time. Strip away the pressure of holiday traditions and gift-giving, and simply read the account with fresh eyes. Let the raw wonder of God becoming flesh wash over you on a warm July morning.
  • 3. Visualize Jesus in your ordinary days: Realize that every ounce of love, service, and care you pour into your family and community is a beautiful act of worship to Him. Thank Him for His faithful provision while you stand at the kitchen sink washing dishes. Imagine His pure pleasure as you enjoy a moment of laughter with your child. And imagine Him gently wiping away your tears if you are walking through an especially painful or lonely month.

When we pause and look up, we remind our souls that our hope isn’t tethered to world events, political climates, or perfect circumstances. Our hope is anchored in a Person.

The more we practice His presence today, the more His supernatural peace will reign in our hearts all year long.

A Mid-Summer Prayer for Peace

Dear Heavenly Father, the world feels so incredibly heavy right now, and it is so easy for my heart to get burdened by anxiety, sadness, and fear. Forgive me for letting the noise of this world drown out Your still, small voice. Thank You for this reminder to pause in the middle of summer and claim the peace of Christ. Wrap Your arms tightly around those who are hurting or missing loved ones today. Fill my home with Your joy, anchor my mind to Your promises, and help me to walk forward knowing that You have already overcome the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
