“As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love” - John 15:9

The Beatles’ 1967 classic hit, “All You Need Is Love,” reveals our need to be loved, but if we depend on love from others, we might wind up disappointed. Many of us don’t know how to love others in the way God loves us. As the song’s lyrics go, “Love, love, love. Love is all you need,” but the love we need is higher than the human love many of us chase so hard to find.

God’s love is what we need, the priceless commodity, freely given to us when we receive His gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ. He is the endless, forever source of love, and although some long for human love above His love, genuine love can only flow from one place, and that is God.  He is love, as 1 John 4:8 tells us: “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

Finding Love in a Loveless World

Other feelings often masquerade as love, such as lust, need, selfishness, and greed. It’s why many relationships don’t last long, because these feelings aren’t real love, not the kind of love that lays down its life for us, but counterfeits that convince individuals it’s love, when in reality, it’s a selfish pursuit to satisfy their own desires, centered on meeting their wants and needs rather than loving others. Although there may be some who truly love us to the best of their ability, still, their love is not perfect like God’s love. Because it isn’t, we can feel at times like we aren’t really loved or even worthy of being loved.

Even when we try to love each other to the best of our abilities, we fall short in comparison to God’s love for us. But when we depend on His loving us, looking to Him to fill us with it, He gives us the love we need to love others. Most of us find it easier to love and sacrifice for those who love us, and much more difficult to do so for those who dislike or even hate us. Yet, we don’t ever have to doubt God’s love for us as Romans 5:8 explains, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

4 Ways to Remain in God’s Love

Because God loves us deeply, we want to remain in His love, but how do we do that when the world and even ourselves, at times, keep telling us we don’t deserve to be loved? The following are four ways to remain in His love.

1. Look to and stay in God’s word.
Keeping God’s word before our eyes and in our hearts keeps our focus on Him rather than on ourselves or on where others are falling short. It helps us to remain in and believe that He loves us. His word keeps our hearts in check and focused on love, as Hebrews 4:12 explains: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

2. Love God.
Remaining in God’s love relies on our loving Him wholeheartedly. As explained in Matthew 22:37, “Jesus replied:’ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’”

3. Love others as God loves us.
Choosing to love others helps us remain in God’s love, allowing His love to flow through us to them. Rather than emptying us out, He keeps filling us to overflowing, so that we can love others as He loves us. As Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

4. Pray continually.
Remaining in God’s love means keeping in constant communication with Him, as Paul urges in Ephesians 6:18, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Praying continually keeps us connected to God in a day-by-day, hour-by-hour, moment-by-moment way.

Let’s pray ...

Dear Father,
Help me to remember that in a loveless world, You deeply love me. When my heart feels unloved, remind me to look to and stay in Your word, to wholeheartedly love You, to love others as You love me, and to pray continually. In time
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
